In my journey as an educator, I've learned that meaningful connections and emotional support are just as important as academic lessons. This realization inspired me to make a "Try-ceratops," a handmade crochet dinosaur, as a special gift for my students at the end of my first placement.

My passion for crochet began at a young age, taught by my mother, whose patience and guidance turned a simple hobby into a lifelong skill. Over time, crocheting has become more than just a creative outlet—it's a way for me to connect with others, share warmth, and communicate care.

During my Grade 4 practicum, I noticed how deeply students responded to moments of emotional support and encouragement. Inspired by their resilience and creativity, I decided to craft a "Try-Ceratops," a playful and friendly dinosaur character that would symbolize the power of perseverance. Along with this creation, I included an original poem I'd written, reinforcing the idea that determination and resilience can help overcome challenges.

Poem titled "The Try-ceratops" by Ms. Buckley, featuring motivational phrases and a cartoon triceratops on the bottom right.

Students warmly embraced Blueberry, choosing his name collectively and integrating him into their daily routines. My Associate Teacher later shared heartwarming news: students were turning to Blueberry as a comforting presence, hugging him when they felt anxious or needed reassurance, especially before tests and challenging activities. Blueberry became their tangible reminder of perseverance, comfort, and care.

This experience reinforced my understanding of the profound impact that emotional support and personal connections have in the classroom. Blueberry's journey from simple crochet creation to beloved classroom hero reminds me why nurturing students emotionally and academically is central to my teaching philosophy.
